Frequently asked questions
›What is LegalWise?
LegalWise answers legal questions based on Estonian and European Union law in force. Under every answer you get the exact provisions with their Riigi Teataja reference and, where they exist, the legislator's explanatory memoranda and Supreme Court case law. You can also search and read laws, review and draft contracts and other documents, see the law as of a chosen date and follow changes to laws. LegalWise was developed together with licensed lawyers.
›Where do the answers come from?
Only from official sources: Riigi Teataja (laws and regulations in force, local government regulations included, and summaries of Supreme Court and EU Court of Justice decisions), EUR-Lex (EU legislation), explanatory memoranda of the Riigikogu, the published decisions of the Public Procurement Review Committee and the Industrial Property Board of Appeal, and opinions of the Chancellor of Justice. The database is updated every night, so answers rest on the version in force.
›How are answers checked?
Before an answer is shown, it is checked automatically that every quote is word for word in the provision and that amounts, deadlines, dates and section references come from the sources. Then the meaning of each sentence is checked against the sources. Anything the sources do not support is removed. If the sources do not contain the answer, LegalWise says so.
›Does LegalWise replace an attorney?
No. LegalWise provides general legal information and is not a law firm. Where deadlines, court proceedings, large sums or other high risks are involved, consult an attorney — LegalWise helps you understand the situation and prepare your questions.
›Why not just use ChatGPT?
General chatbots often answer from memory: they may not see the version in force, may invent sections and court decisions, and do not always show where information comes from. LegalWise answers from the texts of the law in force, cites the provisions the answer relies on and checks the answer against the sources before showing it.
›Which languages can I use?
English, Estonian and Russian. The answer comes in the language of the question; quotes of the law stay in Estonian with a translation.
›Can I review a contract or another document?
Yes. Upload a PDF, DOCX, DOC, RTF, ODT, TXT or a digitally signed ASICE/BDOC file. The report lists risks clause by clause, void or unfair terms, missing terms and proposed wording, with references to the law. The document text is deleted automatically after 30 days.
›Can I ask about the law as of a specific date?
Yes, on the Jurist plan. Choose a date and the answer is based on the version of the laws in force on that day (history of laws from 2010). Earlier versions of regulations and EU acts are not in the database: for them the text in force is used, and the source says so.
›How is my data protected?
The law database and account data are on our own server in Estonia. To write an answer, the question and the retrieved provisions are sent to the language model provider Anthropic; personal codes, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, bank accounts and card numbers are replaced with placeholders before sending. Data is never used for advertising or to train models. You can download and delete your whole history in one click. See the privacy policy for details.
›Can LegalWise help draft a document?
Yes. Choose the type of document (e.g. employment contract, lease, contract of mandate, power of attorney, demand letter), enter the parties and the main terms — LegalWise drafts it under the law in force and shows which provisions the terms rely on. The draft can be downloaded as a Word file.
›How much does it cost?
The Jurist plan costs 100 € per month and includes everything within a monthly usage limit (about 400 questions a month; you see the share used as a percentage). A promo code can be typed straight into the chat.
